• There are several urban areas close to the Oyu Tolgoi site in the South Gobi region. The largest of these areas is the Dalanzadgad soum, major soum of Umnugovi province with a population of 26,386, which is 220 km from the Oyu Tolgoi site. The Dalanzadgad has hospitals, technical college, secondary schools, a local airport, and 6 MW coal-fired power plant. Also, Khanbogd soum is located 35 km east of Oyu Tolgoi and has a population of 8,718 (by the end of 2019). The population of Khanbogd has increased 1.7 times in the last decade. Oyu Tolgoi collaborates with local government agencies in neighboring soums to manage local immigration, population growth, and improve living conditions. Oyu Tolgoi has funded the infrastructure and social projects, such as the construction of a power grid, a drinking water infrastructure, paved road in the soum center, school, its dormitory, kindergarten complex, dental clinic, waste disposal facility, park, and a playground in Khanbogd. In 2019, the paved road which links OT and Khanbogd was commissioned. Furthermore, OT funded the Amended Master Plan of Khanbogd soum. Since 2015, OT has provided $5 million annually to the Gobi Oyu Development Fund under the Partnership Agreement to support the socio-economic development of Umnugovi province. In 2015-2019, the Gobi Oyu Development Fund allocated a total of $22 million in funding and implemented 169 social and regional economic development projects and programs.
